What do you do when you workout SUCKS?
I'm serious! The instructor sucks, the exercises are boring, and it hurts you to endure it all!
I hope all three aren't hitting you right now, but I know we've all hit this wall at one point or another.
Currently, I'm in a rut. I'm a group fitness girl and I love group fitness classes like dance, cardio kick, boot camps, barre, and yoga. I also like to workout on my own to lift (think squats, deadlifts) and work on core power with the TRX and Kettlebells. For the past few months, I've been going to a new gym and during the workout I went to on Saturday morning, the only words that ran through my head was "THIS WORKOUT F-ING SUCKS!!!" It was annoying because it's a "cult-like" workout that everyone seems to love. Some days I just want to move, but following their program doesn't work for me. After I cursed out the workout because I truly hated how I felt, I knew I had to make a change.
If I want to feel better, look better, and do better things in my life, then I have to take a risk and do something new! There's no one workout program right for everyone, so playing around with different workouts will help you to find what works. The funny thing is, what we do about our un-fulfilling workout routine actually translates to what we do when faced with similar situations in our whole life! So let's connect everything and make sh*t happen!
Think about your work: when you hate your job, you can quit and give up, or you can work to make things happen! You can talk to your manager about giving you more responsibility, you can switch departments or change your role, you can search for a new job that fulfills you, or you can create your own thing! We can all relate to that! Now think about it for your exercise routine!
Here are some things that you can do to get a great workout, escape your fitness rut, get excited, and of course #MAKETHINGSHAPPEN:
*SPEAK UP! If something isn't working or is bothering you in a group fitness or personal training session, then speak up and tell the teacher, trainer, manager, or studio director Perhaps there's a modification you didn't think of, but the trainer has more tools on his/her belt for you!
*Research your options! What other workouts exist in your neighborhoods? Is there an app or book that could provide you with some fun alternatives? Who do your friends or co-workers exercise with? Do their trainers have availability for you? Any bloggers or trainers have articles out on fun ways to do cardio or strengthen your legs? Try to incorporate the tips into your routine!
*Check yourself! Do you need to brush up on some things? For example, would your workouts be more enjoyable if you weren't so sore, so tired, so in-flexible? If that's the case, you should try adding yoga and massage therapy into the works or consult with a dietitian to improve your eating habits.
*Take risks! Sign up for a new class or program that you researched. Try at least one new thing (whether it's a class or exercise combo) per week until you find what works and what you love to do. Once you find some other options, quit what's not working and focus on what is! Note: You may not love all workouts, but you should love how they make you feel after!
*DIY! Still can't figure out what works for you? Then create your own thing and DO IT YOURSELF. Devise a plan works to achieve your goals and stick with it. Who knows...you could create the next big thing and your regiment will spread!
Now listen up #FitLeaders! You've got the power to make a change. There are plenty of apps, videos, studios, gyms, and trainers out there. You've just go to find what is the best for you. Variety is the spice of life, so don't be afraid to get spicy! Don't be a quitter. There's always a way to achieve the goals you REALLY want. Let's #SweatForSuccess and #MAKETHINGSHAPPEN!
